If you hadn’t guessed from my last post, there’s something in the oven over here…
… or rather, someone in the oven. 😉 “Chickpea”, as we’ve been calling him or her, is due to arrive April 30, 2017, and we could not be more excited!
The First Trimester
Since we’re a few days shy of ending the first trimester, I hope it’s safe to say that these first 3 months have not been nearly as bad as I expected them to be. Knock on wood, I seem to be one of the lucky few who don’t experience morning sickness. That’s not to say that I have been feeling awesome- I did have a few weeks of light nausea very early on, and the fatigue has totally kicked my butt- but I really did expect to spend these last few weeks making better friends with the toilet. Thankfully that hasn’t been the case!
Along with the lack of sickness, I also haven’t experienced the intense cravings that I expected to have. I did have a two-day thing with vinegar chips, but I would call that a moment of weakness for something I’m always craving anyway. 😉 Something that did surprise me was the food aversions, specifically to veggies and meat. Thankfully, the veggie phase passed pretty quickly, but I’m still not up for meat for the most part- chicken, steak, fish, any of it. It’s not that it’s made me sick, I just don’t want it. Instead, I’ve made a point to get enough protein from other sources; I think this would make a good post in the near future! Bagels, quinoa, oatmeal, and carbs in general were high on my list for the first few weeks, but for the most part my meals have returned to normal (minus the meat).
I will totally admit that I am missing my wine… big time! I’ve also dropped coffee completely (decaf tea here and there), but that hasn’t been as much as a bummer as the sight of my empty wine fridge. I know that first babies are often late, but I’m not-so-secretly hoping that she or he makes an appearance by May 5 so that I can celebrate with a margarita. 😉
Workouts have surprised me, or rather, the lack of workouts. I thought I’d definitely be a pregnant runner, and that just doesn’t seem to be happening. Aside from the fatigue, it’s just… uncomfortable. Instead, I’ve been trying to get out for long walks, and incorporating more yoga and pilates. I’m still working on getting back to a semi-normal workout routine (I’m telling you, the fatigue has really hit hard- like I need to take a cat nap when I get home from work), and am hoping that I’ll be able to get back to 5-6 workouts per week soon, up from the 2-3 that I’m at now.
We got our first glimpse of Chickpea at 7 weeks, and I’m blown away at the huge growth spurt from 7 weeks (above, looking like a gummy bear) to 12 weeks (first photo)! I still have no real ‘bump’ in sight, and it’s crazy to think that there’s someone in there that I can’t see or feel.
We are not planning to find out the sex until baby is born, and although this was my idea, it still makes it hard to start planning. I haven’t purchased a single baby item, which it totally unlike me. Not for lack of trying… I spent my lunch hour wandering through the baby section of TJ Maxx the other day, and still came away empty handed. This weekend, we’re hoping to start moving furniture out of the guest room which is going to become the nursery, and I have a feeling that this might get the ball rolling on the baby plans. 🙂
April 30 still seems so far away, but it’s hard to believe that we’re already 1/3 of the way there!
