The Chickpea is here! Baby “A” was born May 8- a week past her due date- weighing in at 9 pounds, 8 ounces and 22 inches long. It’s true what everyone says; it really does go SO fast. The week that she went past her due date seemed to drag on forever, and now here we are getting close to 3 weeks old! I can’t believe it.
Since the time is flying so quickly already, I wanted to write a post that captures a day in our life with a newborn (before I blink and she’s in kindergarten). The first two weeks seemed like a little bit of a vacation. Jim was on paternity leave and we spent most of the days in awe that she was actually here and wrapping our heads around the parent title.
This week, Jim’s back to work and A, Sydney and I are on our own during the day. I’m not sure if it’s possible to have a routine this early in the game, but most of our days have looked a lot like this one.
A is awake and ready to eat! I check the clock and realize that she was only up once last night; basically a full night’s sleep for everyone! I know it’s likely to change, but she’s been an AWESOME sleeper so far. Every now and then she has a fussier night, but for the most part she’s very easy on us. Since she was back up to her birth weight so quickly the pediatrician gave us the ok to let her sleep without waking to eat. A and I are both fully on board with this; I think Jim and Sydney appreciate the schedule too!
While I’m getting us situated, I’m able to snap some pictures of A’s morning faces. Her expressions crack us up!
After eating, we play in bed for a little bit before doing the diaper/changing thing and finally heading downstairs to start the day. Everything takes a little bit longer with an infant, and now that I’m typing out our day I realize just how long these seemingly small tasks take!
I pop A in her swing, pour myself some coffee and fix breakfast- yogurt, rolled oats, blueberries, honey and walnuts.
I start checking emails and catching up on a few of my favorite blogs before A decides she’s done with the swing for now. I’m only about halfway through breakfast, but decide to take advantage of the brief sunshine, stash my breakfast in the fridge and head out for a walk with the girls.
We do a very slow mile and a half, checking the mail and searching the yard for baby bunnies (Sydney’s current hobby). A has been a fan of walks since day 1 and usually passes out by the end. Today she’s still semi-awake when we get back, so I try to get a few things done with her in tow.
A’s starting to get sleepy, so I pump and shower while checking in on her in the nursery. Once I’m finished she gets a bottle and I rock her to sleep while reading today’s devotional on SheReadsTruth.
Finally reunited with my breakfast!
Check in on A; she’s still napping, so I grab coffee #2 and work on yesterday’s blog post, edit photos and publish before she wakes up again. I try to stay off the computer/phone while she’s awake.
Lunchtime for all of us. I feed A, then set her up in her swing in the kitchen while I make lunch for myself.
Lunches have been all over the place lately. Some days it’s a whole wheat wrap with banana, peanut butter and walnuts. Today is a big salad (greens from my garden!) topped with 2 eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, parmesan and sunflower seeds with leftover balsamic vinaigrette from our steak salad. Whole wheat wrap on the side.
Dessert- frozen strawberries.
Walk #2; another mile. I’m not working out yet, but easing back into it with a lot of walks and wearing my FitBit to encourage more steps. We all enjoy the walks so it’s win-win!
The afternoon is a blur of laundry, a little cleaning, nursing, Netflixing (I’m currently bingeing on Gossip Girl) and a good afternoon nap. I haven’t been very good about the whole ‘sleep when the baby sleeps’ thing, but today I took advantage and it felt awesome!
A helps me out with some cleaning.
Jim is home! I pass off A for some snuggles with Daddy and we all head out for one more walk. Tomorrow’s forecast is drizzly and cold so we’re getting as many steps in as possible today!
We decided on fro yo for dinner, but I know that’s not going to be enough for a real dinner so I make myself a bowl of oatmeal with strawberries before we head out and start on this post while Jim hangs out with A.
As soon as I’m done, we all hop into the car for a family fro yo trip!
I usually keep my toppings pretty clean with just fruit, but always treat myself to a small scoop of something else- today was cookie dough.
Back home and ready for bed! Jim does the diaper thing, A gets a late-night snack and then swaddled. She passes out immediately and I cross my fingers for another good night’s sleep. (Spoiler- she does it! Just 2 wake-ups between bedtime and 7 a.m.)
And that’s our day! I’m sure it’s going to look different very soon, but I’m soaking up every minute of these days while I can!
