If I had to pick one word to describe this week, that word would most definitely be hot. This is coming from someone who is always, always cold. (I mean, yes, I did still use the heater in my office a few times this week.) I’m talking humid, sticky heat, and that is the worst.
I’m looking forward to a weekend spent floating down a river by kayak, and lots of family time. Hopefully a cooler of adult beverages will be floating along with me. Side note: how is it already the middle of July?
Before I get to weekending, I’m covering five things from my week:
I mentioned this in yesterday’s post, but I dusted off my 30 Day Shred dvd last week to continue my love/hate relationship with Jillian Michaels. This is an oldie, but a goodie as far as quick and effective workouts go. I had a lot of success doing the complete 30 day program about five years ago, but have only done the workouts sporadically since. I’d forgotten what a great workout it is and have been using it on weekdays along with running or walking to get my 10,000 steps per day.
I’m thinking about doing a full rundown of the program in a separate post, but the 30 Day Shred is a 25 minute circuit of strength, cardio and abs in a 3-2-1 set. It’s perfect for someone like me who is looking for a ‘mindless’ workout; meaning I just want to do it without thinking about it too much. (That’s why I like running.) Popping in a workout DVD or streaming an online workout lets someone else do the planning so I can just workout and be done with it.
This watermelon, arugula and goat cheese salad is the perfect meal for the hottest of days. There’s really no recipe; just toss cubed watermelon with arugula and goat cheese (feta is good too!), then drizzle with olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper.
My poor garden experienced some neglect the past two weeks, but got a makeover this week! I guess the volume of weeds I pulled out is a good sign that it’s prime growing weather?
Sadly, my favorite section of the garden has gone to seed (RIP arugula, spinach and lettuce), so I ripped that out and replanted some arugula. I’ll wait to do the rest until later in August. The kale is just hanging on (see bottom left), but the tomatoes are taking off! All of the tomato plants were finally staked and caged last night, in hopes of keeping them in control come August. Please note the monster cabbage. I need some cabbage recipes, stat!
4. Wish List
I’ve been wearing the Fitbit Alta since early June, and it’s time for a new band. I’m trying to hold out for the Tory Burch bands, but no word on when they’ll release a design for the Alta. Fingers crossed that they repeat this style:
In the meantime, I’ve been seeking out more affordable alternatives like this one from Etsy. I’m also considering just purchasing a silver rubber band that would match a bit better with my usual watch and bracelets stack.
